A frame we made, hung in a house, reflecting a staircase we made. Everything drawn further down this page is drawn to the section this one was built to.

Not a frame.A section.

It is hot-rolled steel angle, mitered on a fiber laser and welded closed by hand, and the glass rests down inside the L. What faces the room is an eighth of an inch of steel, with the glass recessed in shadow behind it. No stocked frame holds that line, because no stocked frame is made from structural angle.

Drawn with ¾″ backing. On a shipped wall piece the backing is yours to pick, and it sets how deep the shadow reads: thinner backing, deeper reveal.

The depth isnot a style

The reveal is what the section produces: the leg stands an inch and a half off the wall, the glass sits inside it, and the steel is left standing proud of the glass. Nothing is applied, nothing is trim. The drawing is the product.

How it’s built

    Scanned

    The opening is captured with a 3D scanner, not a tape. The frame is built to the wall it will hang on.

  2. 02

    Cut by light

    Every miter is cut on a fiber laser. The four corners close because they were never approximate.

  3. 03

    Welded closed

    Each corner is welded by hand into a single continuous line of steel.

  4. 04

    Ground flush

    The joint is ground until it disappears. Run a finger over the corner. Nothing.

Four is where the catalogue ends, not the shop. Beyond four by six feet nobody stocks this. The same section takes a canvas or a print just as well.

Questions

What exactly do I get?
A floor mirror arrives complete, mirror set, anywhere. A wall piece in Portland or Vancouver arrives complete too, because we supply the glass and set it ourselves. A wall piece shipped anywhere else is the steel frame alone, and your glazier cuts and sets the glass to the drawing that ships with it.
Do I need a glazier?
Only for a wall piece shipped outside Portland and Vancouver. Locally we handle the glass. Floor mirrors never need one.
How deep is the shadow around the glass?
You choose it. The frame stands 1½″ off the wall, and whatever the backing does not fill becomes the reveal. A ¾″ backing leaves ⅜″. A ½″ backing leaves ⅝″. A ¼″ backing leaves ⅞″. A ⅛″ backing leaves a full inch.
What size can you make?
Any size. Four catalogue sizes run from 36 × 48 inches at $850 to 72 × 96 inches at $1,950, frame only. Anything else is quoted from the dimensions you send.
How long does it take?
Two weeks to ship, counted from the day you approve the drawing. Nothing is cut before that.
What happens if the glass does not fit?
When we scan the opening ourselves, the fit is on us. When you send us dimensions, the frame is built to the drawing you approved, so the drawing is what both sides are holding.
What is it made of?
1½″ × 1½″ × ⅛″ hot-rolled steel angle, mitered on a fiber laser, welded by hand and ground flush. Powder coated matte black or warm white.
Where are they made?
Vancouver, Washington. Every frame is cut and welded in our own shop.
